Benefits & features

Why businesses switch to Check 21.

Check 21 lets banks clear checks from digital images instead of paper, so your checks move as fast as the rest of your payments.

Faster check processing

Checks become electronic images that clear and settle faster, with no waiting for paper to travel through the banking system.

Better cash flow

Deposit the day you receive a check and get access to funds sooner, so you can plan and spend with confidence.

More efficiency

No trips to the bank and less manual handling. Your team saves time and makes fewer errors.

Lower costs

Cut spending on paper handling, storage, courier trips and manual labor compared with depositing paper checks.

Secure transmission

Check images and payment data are encrypted in transit, reducing the risk of lost or stolen checks.

Simple recordkeeping

Every check is stored as a searchable image, so finding a past payment takes seconds, not a trip to the filing cabinet.

Better for the planet, too. Less paper, fewer courier trips and less storage, supporting greener business practices.

How it works

Three steps, done from your desk.

Step 1

Scan the check

Capture the front and back with a check scanner or a supported mobile app.

Step 2

Send it securely

The image and payment data are encrypted and sent to your bank or processor.

Step 3

Funds clear

The check clears electronically, often in one to two business days, depending on your bank.

FAQ

Check 21, explained.

Still have a question? Ask us on WhatsApp.

What is Check 21?
Check 21 is the US Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, passed in 2003. It lets banks clear checks using digital images instead of moving the paper checks, and makes a printed copy of that image (a substitute check) legally equal to the original.
How does Check 21 processing work for my business?
You scan or photograph the front and back of each check, the image and payment data are sent securely to your bank or processor, and the check clears electronically. You no longer need to drive paper checks to the bank.
How fast will I get my money?
Usually faster than depositing paper. Electronically deposited checks often clear in one to two business days. Your bank sets the exact funds availability and can place holds on some deposits.
Is Check 21 the same as eCheck or ACH?
No. Check 21 processes an image of a paper check. eCheck and ACH debit a customer's bank account directly from their routing and account numbers, with no paper check at all. Many businesses use both.
What equipment do I need?
A check scanner, or in some setups a mobile app, plus a Check 21 or remote deposit account with your bank or processor. We help you choose the right setup for your volume.
Can I use Check 21 to take check payments by phone?
Be careful here. Taking check details by phone and creating a check on the customer's behalf (a remotely created check) is banned for telemarketing sales under the FTC's Telemarketing Sales Rule. For phone payments, ACH or eCheck with proper authorization is usually the right choice.
What should I do with paper checks after scanning?
Store them securely for the period your bank or processor requires, then destroy them safely. Don't deposit the same check twice.
