eCheck, explained.

Still have a question? Ask us on WhatsApp.

What is an eCheck?
An eCheck is an electronic version of a paper check. The customer authorizes a debit from their checking account, and the payment moves through the ACH network to your bank account.
Is eCheck the same as ACH?
Pretty much. eCheck is a type of ACH payment. "ACH" is the network; "eCheck" usually means a one-time or recurring debit the customer authorizes online or by phone.
How long does an eCheck take to clear?
Typically 1–3 business days. Some processors offer faster settlement. Banks can also return a payment afterwards, for example for insufficient funds.
Is eCheck cheaper than credit cards?
Usually, yes. eCheck fees are often a low flat fee or small percentage, which makes a big difference on large or recurring payments.
What do I need from the customer?
Their name, bank routing number, account number and clear authorization: a checkbox online, a recorded phone authorization or a signed form, depending on how you collect it.
Can high-risk businesses use eCheck?
Often, yes. Many high-risk businesses use eCheck as their main rail or as a backup to card processing. Approval depends on your industry, history and the processor.
